Like her sister Effie, Sophie Gray (later Caird) was a Pre-Raphaelite muse. A portrait by her brother-in-law Millais shows her wearing a dress embroidered with a heart and heartsease or viola flowers, inspiring the hand-embroidered nature motifs on the detailed buttons of this bag.
