Crochet terminology can vary depending on where a pattern originates. The two most used systems are UK (British) and US (American) terms, and although the stitches are often worked the same way, they are called by different names. This can lead to confusion if you're following an international pattern.

Can I become a Scheepjes retailer?

Why are there knots in my yarn?
At Scheepjes, we understand that you prefer to use yarn without knots. However, a thread has a natural length, and sometimes it breaks during the production process, requiring a knot to restore the thread. If we only offered yarn without knots, there would be a lot of leftover yarn, which does not align with our corporate social responsibility goals.
We adhere to the rule that there may be a maximum of two knots in a 50-gram ball. If you notice too many knots in your yarn, we recommend returning to the store where you purchased it. They will help you find a suitable solution.
For the Whirl, see the section below: Why are there knots in my Whirl?
Why are there knots in my Whirl?
Fuzzbuzzes are the little irregularities or soft tufts that you may find in your Whirl thread, and they are a natural feature of the yarn. Each Whirl is spun from six fine strands. During a colour change, one strand is replaced by another, and this process can sometimes create a tiny fuzzbuzz.
Think of it as a marker of magic. When you reach a fuzzbuzz, you know you are arriving at the next colour in your yarn cake, which means your project is about to take on a beautiful new shade!
If you come across a fuzzbuzz, simply dampen your fingertips and smooth it gently between your fingers. It will blend into your stitches and won’t be visible in your work. If you have any questions or concerns about fuzzbuzzes, we recommend returning to the shop where you purchased your yarn. They will be happy to help you with a suitable solution.
Where can I find the matches for Whirls and Whirlettes?
You can find a complete and up-to-date list of all Whirl and Whirlette matches on the Scheepjes website here:
Whirl & Whirlette Combination Guide
This guide helps you match the solid-colour Whirlettes to the gradient Whirls, so you can extend your project, add borders, or create seamless transitions. Each Whirl has one or more recommended Whirlette colours that coordinate with either the inner or outer shades of the cake.
Why does the yarn look different than in photos?
At Scheepjes, all our product photography is done by skilled professional photographers using high-resolution equipment and carefully calibrated studio lighting. We take every possible step to ensure the yarn you see on your screen is an accurate representation of the product in real life.
However, there are a few common reasons why the yarn you receive might look slightly different than expected:
- Screen Differences Colours may appear differently depending on your device's display settings. Brightness, contrast, and screen calibration all affect how colours are rendered, so the same yarn may look slightly different on a phone, tablet, or computer screen.
- Lighting Conditions at Home Even if our photography is precise, home lighting varies widely. Yarn viewed in natural daylight will look different than it does under warm indoor lights or LED bulbs.
- Dye Lot Variations All yarn is dyed in batches, known as dye lots. Even within the same colour number, minor differences in shade can occur between dye lots due to the hand-dyeing or industrial dyeing process. This is a normal part of yarn production.
- Yarn Texture and Fiber Content Certain fibres, like bamboo, silk, mercerized cotton, or alpaca, reflect light differently. This can make the yarn appear more shiny, muted, or vibrant depending on the finish and fibre structure.
Where can I find shade cards for Scheepjes yarns?
Scheepjes offers digital shade cards for many of our yarn collections. These cards provide an easy way to view all available colours, including shade numbers and names, helping you plan your projects and compare colours more accurately.
You can explore the digital shade cards for each yarn via the following link:
View digital shade cards (link coming soon)
How do I care for my knit or crochet items?
Please see the ball band on your yarn for washing information. If you no longer have the ball band, you can find care details on the yarn pages here on the Scheepjes website.
Why do you discontinue yarns?
We discontinue yarns for a number of reasons, but the most common is that we need to make space in our warehouse for new and innovative products. To do this, we regularly review our existing range and phase out yarns that are no longer performing well in terms of demand or popularity.
Other reasons for discontinuation may include:
- Challenges in sourcing raw materials or specific dye ingredients
- Shifts in market trends or seasonal preferences
- A decision to replace a yarn with a new or improved alternative
Discontinuing a yarn is never taken lightly. It allows us to keep our range fresh, sustainable, and better aligned with the needs and preferences of our global crafting community.
Can you share certificates of your certifications?
Scheepjes is committed to producing yarns that meet high standards of safety, sustainability, and ethical sourcing. Many of our yarns are certified by internationally recognized bodies. We understand that you would like to know more about the certifications of our yarns, unfortunately, we cannot share the certificates themselves due to sensitive business information. Below is an overview of the certifications you may find on our products:
GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard
Yarns with the GOTS label contain certified organic fibres and meet strict environmental and social criteria throughout the entire production process. Learn More here. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
Our OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified yarns have been tested for harmful substances and are safe for human use, including babies and those with sensitive skin. Learn more here.
Mulesing-Free
Scheepjes supports animal welfare by sourcing wool only from suppliers who guarantee that their sheep are not subjected to mulesing.
GRS – Global Recycled Standard
GRS-certified yarns contain verified recycled content and are produced using responsible social, environmental, and chemical practices.
RWS – Responsible Wool Standard
The RWS ensures that the wool comes from farms that meet strict animal welfare and land management standards. It also provides full traceability from farm to finished product.
EN71-3 Certified
Yarns with EN71-3 certification have been tested for toxic elements and meet safety standards for toys and baby items. This makes them ideal for creating handmade gifts that are both heartfelt and safe for little ones.
Why is dye lot important?
A dye lot refers to the specific batch in which a yarn has been dyed. Yarn from the same dye lot has been coloured at the same time, using the same dye mixture, under the same conditions. This ensures the most consistent colour across all the skeins in that batch.
Even if two skeins have the same colour name and number, yarns from different dye lots can show slight variations in shade. These differences might be barely noticeable in the ball but once worked into a larger project, especially garments they can become quite visible.

I’ve found a mistake in a Scheepjes pattern. What do I do?
Please email us at marketing@debondtbv.nl and we will do our best to assist you.
Are Scheepjes patterns in UK or US terms?
Scheepjes publication patterns are always available UK terms. Our Crochet-a-long (CAL) projects are available in both UK and US terms to accommodate crocheters around the world. Be sure to download the correct version for your preferred terminology.
For each pattern available from independent designers on the Scheepjes website, we indicate whether the designer has used UK crochet terms, US crochet terms, or both. This information is typically stated in the information for the pattern.
What is the difference between UK and US crochet terms?
Crochet terminology can vary depending on where a pattern originates. The two most used systems are UK (British) and US (American) terms, and although the stitches are often worked the same way, they are called by different names. This can lead to confusion if you're following an international pattern.
Here’s a quick reference guide:
| UK Term | US Equivalent |
|---|---|
| Double Crochet(dc) | Single Crochet(sc) |
| Half Treble(htr) | Half Double(hdc) |
| Treble(tr) | Double Crochet(dc) |
| Double Crochet(dc) | Treble Crochet(tr) |
| Slip Stitch(ss) | Slip Stitch(sl st) |
| Chain(ch) | Chain(ch) |
Tip: Always check the pattern notes! Designers typically indicate whether they are using UK or US terms at the beginning of the pattern. If it's not clear, you can often guess based on the stitch names used.
What is a gauge swatch?
A gauge swatch is a small sample of fabric that you crochet or knit before starting your main project. It is used to check your tension, meaning how tightly or loosely you stitch, to ensure your finished item turns out the correct size.
A gauge swatch is usually a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inch) square made using the stitch pattern and yarn recommended in the pattern. Once it’s finished, you measure how many stitches and rows you get over 10 cm and compare that to the pattern’s gauge instructions.
Example: A pattern might say “Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 10 cm in double crochet.” That means your swatch should have 18 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm square.
Why is a gauge swatch important?
Even if you are using the same yarn and hook size as the designer, your personal tension might be different. If your stitches are tighter or looser than intended, your project may end up too small or too large.
- For garments: Incorrect gauge can result in a sweater that is too tight, too short, or has sleeves that don’t fit.
- For blankets or home decor: Your piece might use more or less yarn than expected or not match the intended dimensions.
How do I fix it if my gauge is off?
If you have too few stitches, your stitches are too loose. Try a smaller hook.
If you have too many stitches per 10 cm, your stitches are too tight. Try a larger hook.
Repeat the swatch until your gauge matches. It might feel like an extra step, but it saves a lot of frustration later.
Can I use a different yarn for a pattern?
Yes, you can use a different yarn than the one recommended in the pattern, but it's important to first make a gauge swatch to ensure your tension matches the designer’s. Different yarns vary in thickness, fiber content, and how they behave when worked up, so checking your gauge will help ensure the finished project is the correct size and shape.
You should also compare the meterage of the substitute yarn to the original, as different yarns may offer more or less length per ball—even within the same weight category. Always check that you have enough yarn for the full project and be aware that using a different fiber may also change the drape and overall feel of your finished piece.

What is the difference between a CAL and a MAL?
While both CALs and MALs are community-based craft-alongs hosted by Scheepjes, they differ in size, structure, and formality. Here's how they compare:
CAL (Crochet-Along)
A CAL is a large-scale annual event produced and hosted by Scheepjes in collaboration with a designer. It typically involves:
- A brand-new, exclusive crochet pattern released in weekly parts
- Premium kits available for purchase, including carefully curated yarns and extras
- A dedicated promotional campaign across Scheepjes channels
- Strong community engagement via the Scheepjes Facebook groups
- The event usually runs for several months
MAL (Make-Along)
A MAL is a smaller, more informal event also hosted by Scheepjes and led by the designer. It differs from a CAL in that:
- There are no official yarn kits, participants can use Scheepjes yarns of their own choice
- Patterns are often released in one part or over a shorter span
- Events typically last between 4 to 6 weeks
- The atmosphere is relaxed and flexible, but still includes access to support, guidance, and community interaction
