Information
Scheepjes proudly presents the d’Histoire Naturelle Official Scheepjes 2020 CAL & Read-A-Long designed by Scheepjes Blogger Christina Hadderingh from A Spoonful of Yarn blog. The design for this spectacular crocheted blanket is inspired by the many galleries of the breathtakingly beautiful Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Museum of Natural History) in Paris, which is highlighted in the book All The Light We Cannot See by the award-winning author, Anthony Doerr. Participants are encouraged to read along with the book as they crochet to make the most of this extraordinary Crochet and Read-A-Long experience!

During the Crochet-A-Long, both adventurous beginners and experienced crocheters from around the world will have the opportunity to follow a unique journey in creating the stunning d’Histoire Naturelle blanket. The CAL & Read-A-Long will begin on September 23, 2020. Over the course of 11 weeks, the FREE PDF crochet pattern will be published in 6 parts, covering 1 to 2 weeks, rather than weekly releases as in previous CALs. The pattern will be available in English (UK & US), Dutch and German in the Official International and Dutch Facebook groups as well as on Scheepjes.com. Additional languages may be made available during the CAL as participants are provided with a translation template in the Facebook groups to translate the CAL into their own languages.

In the Facebook groups, participants will interact with and receive extensive support from the global Scheepjes crafting community, consisting of over 100,000 members, the highly skilled mods and admin, and of course, from the designer herself, Christina. Throughout the CAL, Christina will be sharing detailed photo tutorials on her blog to help participants through the more tricky parts of the project. Scheepjes Blogger Esther Dijkstra, from It’s all in a Nutshell blog, will be providing further support for the written pattern with comprehensive video tutorials, available in English and Dutch for both right and left handed crafters. The videos will be shared via Esther’s blog, as well as in the Facebook groups and on Scheepjes.com. On September 16th, Scheepjes will share a Tips & Tricks PDF in the Facebook groups and on their website to help participants prepare for the CAL. The Tips & Tricks contains useful information on materials, special stitches and techniques and instructions for how to crochet a gauge swatch, which gives participants the chance get support in the Facebook group before the CAL begins.

Scheepjes has put together a choice of 8 official kits for the CAL, each including the required yarn to complete the blanket as well as extra goodies! They have created 4 spectacular colourways, each based on colours and elements from a different department of the Natural History Museum: Herbarium, Mineralogy, Conchology and Entomology. These 4 colourways are available in Scheepjes Stone Washed & River Washed (78% Cotton, 22% Acrylic, yarn weight Sport) or Scheepjes Colour Crafter (100% Premium Acrylic, yarn weight DK).

Stone Washed & River Washed Kits
Scheepjes Stone Washed & River Washed go hand in hand with each other. While Stone Washed is made up of an ecru-coloured cotton ‘core’ surrounded by a halo of fluffy acrylic fibres in contrasting colours, River Washed has a coloured ‘core’, which also creates a special contrast. Both yarns are made of 78% Cotton and 22% Acrylic and have a soft woolly feel. The Sport Weight yarns are breathable and provide a lovely texture with beautiful stitch definition.
The Stone Washed kit includes:
  • 38 x 50g balls of Scheepjes Stone Washed & River Washed • 1 x pack of Toho Glass Beads
  • 1 x beading needle
  • Stitch markers
  • 1 x Official CAL souvenir bookmark
  • 1 x letter from the designer
  • 1 x YARN The After Party booklet
Available in four colourways:
Entomology, Herbarium, Conchology and Mineralogy.
RRP € 125 / £109 / $139

Book Club Sunday
What makes the Scheepjes 2020 CAL truly unique and different from previous years, is that alongside the crochet-along Scheepjes has also organised a read-along, which adds an extra dimension to the crochet experience. Through her design, Christina will take the crafters on a journey through the museum galleries described in the book All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr, as they create visual reminders of their adventure into the details of their d’Histoire Naturelle blanket.
Scheepjes and Christina will be hosting a weekly Book Club Sunday meet-up in the official Scheepjes Facebook groups. As an added bonus, Scheepjes has organised unique and exclusive interview footage (English language only) with the author, Anthony Doerr! Each week, participants will be given reading material to prepare for Book Club Sundays that corresponds to the part of the pattern they are currently crocheting. If crafters aren’t also avid readers or audiobook listeners, that’s no problem, they are always welcome to join in and just enjoy the CAL itself!

About the designer
Since she started crafting 10 years ago, Dutch Blogger Christina Hadderingh simply can't imagine her life without crochet or knitting. With her trusty crochet hook in hand and her cat, Poose, by her side, she sits and daydreams while creating beautiful designs. Christina finds inspiration all around her, but especially in nature and books. Read more via her blog A Spoonful of Yarn .
CAL Timeline
The Scheepjes 2020 CAL is both a Crochet-A-Long and a Read-A-Long! This means our weekly content throughout the CAL will be a little different than our previous CALs. Instead of weekly pattern parts, we are releasing larger pattern parts that cover 1 or 2 weeks and weekly Bookclub Sunday materials.

Information
In this part we will visit the Entomology department and transform our squares into octagons. To do this, the four sides are worked separately to make four additional corners with bees in them. When working Rounds 20-24, don’t weave in the ends until after finishing Round 24, because that makes it easier to see the loop of the first and last st.
